A Superfecta Box bet gave retiree James Bell of Cheverly Man a $13,305 Racetrax prize.

Finds success with Superfecta Box bet

A change in betting strategy and brush with Lottery luck gave loyal Racetrax player James Bell of Cheverly a $13,305 prize this week. The happy retiree won by placing a Superfecta Box bet while playing his favorite Maryland Lottery game.

The U.S. Marine veteran found his good fortune at Champagne Liquor on Landover Road in Hyattsville. He stopped there to meet a buddy and play rounds of Racetrax. In the past, the Racetrax fan has placed Superfecta bets only to see his four horses finish in the wrong order. He decided to change his strategy and placed a Superfecta box bet. That allowed his four horses to finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in any order.

“I told myself that I wanted to win a lot of money that day,” he said. “I decided to take $20 and purchase 10 games of Racetrax.

Seeing his horses cross the finish line together gave the 71-year-old a win but he wasn’t sure about the size of his prize. “At first I thought I won around $1,500 or so,” he said. “I had no idea that I had won over $13,000. I’m still shocked at how much it is.”

His lucky combination was 6, 8, 9 and 12.

The excited Prince George’s County resident plans to use some of his winnings for home repairs. “I may also treat myself to a new flat-screen television,” he said. “Now that I’m getting things done around the house, I don’t have to hear my wife yelling about all the repairs we need.”

Also in the winner’s zone is his lucky Lottery retailer. Champagne Liquor located at 5611 Landover Road in Prince George’s County earns a $133.05 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Waldorf Racetrax player Stays on Winning Track

Racetrax player Felicia Wade of Waldorf, left, danced into the Winner’s Circle with her sister Tamara Wade to celebrate her $11,730.80 score.

$11,730.80 prize is one of several recent scores for lucky woman

Loyal Racetrax player Felicia Wade of Waldorf has been on a winning track for a few weeks now. Playing a Superfecta Box bet of 10 cents on Aug. 17 resulted in an $11,730.80 payday.

But that was just one of her recent wins. Two days later, on Aug. 19, she also played the virtual ponies in the simulated horseracing game and hit for another $2,000. On top of that, last month she played a series of Pick 4 combinations of the numbers 1, 0, 1 and 7. When the number came up in the midday drawing on July 29, she ended up with a stack of winning tickets worth about $60,000!

The 49-year-old danced her way into the Buddy Roogow Winner’s Circle at Maryland Lottery headquarters, followed by her sister Tamara Wade, after collecting her winnings. Asked about the reason behind her good fortune playing Racetrax, Felicia said, “I was just feeling lucky. I just study the board and pick four numbers.”

She placed a bet on horses 3, 5, 8 and 11 to finish the race in first, second, third and fourth place in any order — and they did!

A federal government employee, Felicia did not have any specific plans for her winnings other than sharing some of the windfall with her son. She wants to spread the word that real people are Lottery winners, saying she once was skeptical. “I never believed before,” she said, “and then a clerk checked my ticket.” As was the case with much of what she had to say when she was picking up her winnings, this comment ended in laughter.

Also having a reason to smile is her lucky Lottery retailer. Dash In #1130 at 11290 Billingsley Road in Waldorf earned a $117 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

‘Lucky Biker’ who likes fast pace of Racetrax has a $23,940 score

This Fairfax, Va. fan won $23,940 playing Racetrax in District Heights.

Paying off a fast, new motorcycle is part of his plan for the winnings

Speed is definitely what attracts a “Lucky Biker” from Virginia to play Racetrax, and he was able to pocket the winnings from two quick picks he made on July 23 in District Heights. The two tickets hit for a total of $23,940, which will help him pay off a fast, new motorcycle.

“I don’t like to wait,” the Fairfax, Va. Man said of his preference for playing Racetrax, and sometimes Keno, as opposed to draw games or even scratch-offs. He had to wait a month, however, to  claim his winnings because he needed to make arrangements to travel from Virginia to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The July 23 Superfecta Wheel win was not “Lucky Biker’s” first big score in Racetrax; he also hit for a single race in the $12,000 to $13,000 range.

Seeing the animated ponies zip around the track in the simulated horserace is part of the attraction for the 30-year-old player. In addition to enjoying the quick pace of the Racetrax game, “Lucky Biker” is also a fan of motorcycle riding and its speed-related thrills. He recently purchased a new ride, and plans to use some of his prize to pay off the 1,000cc machine.

Though Racetrax is his go-to game, “Lucky Biker” sometimes plays the casino games at MGM National Harbor, where he redeems winning Lottery tickets.

“You can cash out there. It’s hard to walk out with all that cash without playing a little,” he says.

Also benefiting from the win is Dodge City Market at 7409 Marlboro Pike in District Heights, where “Lucky Biker” played the virtual ponies. The store will earn a bonus of $239.40 (equal to 1 percent of the prize total) for selling a winning ticket over $10,000.

$31,454 Racetrax Prize Gives Contractor a Cash Infusion

Changing his Racetrax bet type helped this home improvement contractor win $31,454.

Trifecta bet brings home the big prize

A Baltimore home improvement contractor saw his Racetrax luck change dramatically when he switched his bet type and the clerk added a dose of Lottery luck. He won $31,454!

The hard-working father of three, who owns A.H. Contracting LLC, visited his favorite Lottery retailer less than two hours after dawn on Aug. 10. The 40-year-old studies Racetrax results and realized the Nos. 10, 11 and 12 horses hadn’t won recently. And Mr. “A.H. Contracting,” as he dubbed himself for Lottery publicity, had a feeling that a prize was coming his way.

“It was time!” he said.

Instead of placing a Quinella bet — that two or more horses would finish in first and second place, in any order — he bought a 10-draw Trifecta ticket, picking the 12, 11 and 10 horses to finish first, second and third in that exact order. He stepped up to buy the ticket at Liberty Sunoco in Baltimore, and that’s when the store employee enlisted the help of Lady Luck.

“The clerk said, ‘You spend a lot of money here’ and blew on the ticket and said ‘This is the one,’” “A.H. Contracting” recalled. He took the lucky ticket and left Liberty Sunoco, heading to a diner to eat breakfast before work. Only after he finished his meal did he check the race results on his smartphone and discover that the second race out of the 10 on his ticket made him a big winner.

“I was a little shaky,” he admitted. “I paid for my food and the food for the guy behind me.” He also returned to Liberty Sunoco and gave the clerk a tip!

The Baltimore resident said he plans to invest his prize in his company and in his wife’s company. The clerk isn’t the only person at Liberty Sunoco to benefit from the big win. The Lottery will give the Baltimore County retailer located at 5900 Liberty Road a bonus of $314.54 — equal to 1 percent of the prize — for selling a winning Racetrax ticket valued at $10,000 or more.

Winner enjoys playing digital ponies and thundering thoroughbreds

A casual fan of live thoroughbred racing from Upper Marlboro found better luck with the Maryland Lottery’s digital ponies last week. His Racetrax Trifecta combination of 6, 8 and 11 — with the multiplier bonus feature added — paid a handsome $16,629 return.

Although he also plays Pick 3 and Pick 4, as well as Mega Millions from time to time, the cyber security engineer prefers Racetrax both for the excitement of watching the animated races and because of the control afforded by the many betting options. The 40-year-old often ventures to Dover Downs mainly for the thrill of watching the thundering thoroughbreds. He has no real formula, picking horses because he likes their names or feels an affinity for a jockey.

“I play $20 max,” he says of his Delaware excursions. The Prince George’s County resident also travels with a group of friends late each summer to watch a series of outdoor races near Culpeper, Va.

As for his Racetrax winnings, the lucky player has nothing special in mind. “I’m going to pay off some bills and get ready for work next week,” he said.

The winner found his lucky race at Everest Mart, which is located at 201 North Liberty Street in the Eastern Shore town of Centreville. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, the Lottery retailer picks up a bonus from the Lottery amounting to 1 percent of the total prize, or $166.29 in this case.

Severna Park man’s chase for a big win ends in Lottery Winner’s Circle

A big fan of Maryland Lottery games, especially Racetrax, got to celebrate his newfound luck in the Winner’s Circle at Lottery headquarters. His winning combination — 10, 1, 2 and 12 — gave him a $10,146 prize.

The Severna Park resident watched a combination of the numbers appear for several days before he played them and won. His lucky day was Aug. 24, when he was waiting to meet a friend and killing time playing Racetrax at his favorite Lottery retailer, Camp Meade Shell in Linthicum. The Anne Arundel County man placed $9 on a Superfecta bet that horses 10, 1, 2 and 12 would finish the race in first, second, third and fourth place in that exact order. Because the Lottery has a $6 for $5 Racetrax Promotion under way through Sept. 9, the player got a discount on his 10 drawings, too.

After playing his games, the 57-year-old placed the ticket in his pocket and went to meet his friend. Later that evening, he went back to Anne Arundel County’s Camp Meade Shell to check the ticket. The retailer had great news: he won $10,146!

“He told me, ‘You finally got it!’ ” said the winner, smiling. “I just couldn’t believe it.”

The lab tech then put the ticket in his pocket again and went home. The next morning, he forgot all about the ticket in his pocket until he reached for his wallet and the winning ticket fell to the floor. Good thing he noticed and picked it up right away! The Lottery urges all of its players to sign the back of winning tickets immediately and place them in a safe place until the winner can claim the prize.

The happy winner said he plans to use some of the prize to help his college-age daughter financially.

His lucky retailer located at 463 North Camp Meade Road in Linthicum can also celebrate. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, Camp Meade Shell picks up a bonus from the Lottery amounting to 1 percent of the total prize, or $101.46.

A player from Catonsville had a $10,000 payday on Aug. 28 after scratching off a $1,000,000 Blowout ticket purchased at the Edmondson Crown gas station at 6122 Edmondson Avenue in Catonsville. Launched on June 25, $1,000,000 Blowout is a $20 ticket and six of its $1 million top prizes remain unclaimed. The Baltimore County Lottery retailer is also a winner. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket worth $10,000 or more, E-Z Convenience receives a bonus of $106.29, equal to 1 percent of the total value of the winning ticket.

New Racetrax player “Rigo” landed a lucky win to share with family and friends.

Hospitality worker from Silver Spring on a roll with quick-pick wins

A Silver Spring scratch-off fan switched his game of choice to Racetrax several months ago after learning of a relative’s success with the computer-animated horse racing game. The novice now has a success story of his own to tell!

“He wins smaller prizes all the time,” said “Rigo,” who won $12,352. After finding the playslip confusing, “Rigo” opted for quick-pick tickets and started winning prizes three weeks ago. The 50-year-old hospitality worker usually places Trifecta bets and recently scored an $800 prize.

The day of his lucky win, the father of four was shopping at the Internacional Mercado Latino convenience store in Wheaton. He added a 20-draw Racetrax Trifecta ticket to his purchase and saved $3 on his wager because of a $6 for $5 Racetrax promotion under way through Sept. 9.

“Rigo” returned home with his items and checked the race results there. Much to his surprise, the 10, 12 and 6 horses finished in that exact order in one of his 20 races, delivering his biggest win ever! The lucky player and his wife plan to share some of their prize with family and friends.

His retailer is also in the money. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, the market located at 2519 Ennalls Avenue earns a $123.52 bonus — equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Richard Joyner of Havre de Grace celebrates his $39,697 Racetrax win.

Havre de Grace Army veteran makes a Superfecta pick worth $39,697

Ever since he was a kid, Racetrax player Richard Joyner of Havre de Grace has dreamed of numbers but the digits 39,697 came as a surprise on Sept. 7! That’s the day he won that amount playing Racetrax.

Retired from the U.S. Army after 22 years of service, Richard now works as a civilian federal employee. The big fan of Racetrax plays nearly every day, but his affinity for the game is unrelated to horse racing. Richard explains his fascination with the game by saying, “I like it because it is like playing Pick 4.

His interest in betting on four-number combinations began in the 1980s when the Washington, D.C. native was following college basketball rivalries. One evening, he dreamed of a pair of two-digit numbers. A basketball game he was watching a short while later ended with the same score as the numbers from his dream. Richard then bought a DC Lottery Pick 4 ticket, 50 cents boxed, with his “lucky” numbers and won $200!

His love of numbers has remained strong over the years. After retiring from the service, Richard took a job in Maryland to be close to his family and boyhood home and discovered the existence of Racetrax. When he learned he could play the four-number combinations he has favored ever since his D.C. Lottery score, the Harford County resident was off to the Racetrax races.

On Sept. 7, his horses stepped into the Winner’s Circle in a big way. Richard visited Northside Liquors at 210 North Philadelphia Boulevard in Aberdeen to place a Racetrax Superfecta wager. He bet that horses 5, 7, 9 and 8 would finish in that exact order and scored his $39,697 win.

“Finally!” he said. “My wife will be happy when she sees this.” Richard plans to pay off some bills with the proceeds and take his wife on a trip to celebrate his big score.

Also winning is Northside Liquors, which earns a bonus of $396.97 from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Finds luck placing a Superfecta bet

A Harford County driver’s Racetrax horses steered her into a welcome trip to the Maryland Lottery’s Winner’s Circle this week to collect her $18,381 prize.

The lucky Street resident found her windfall after stopping at Royal Farms #95, which is located at 3606 Conowingo Road in her town. The 44-year-old placed five Superfecta bets that horses 5, 8, 7, and 4 would finish the race in that exact order.

“Before I could even sit down, I saw that my horses had won,” she said. “I was definitely surprised.” The winner chose horses that represent family members’ birthdays and said she plans to save most of her prize. “This win is like a big buffer for me if something unexpected comes up,” she said.

Her lucky Harford County retailer also finishes as a champion. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, the Royal Farms store earns a $183.81 bonus from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Loyal Racetrax fan Shawntee Dawson and her horse-loving pal celebrate her $15,138 win!

Superfecta bet brings Pennsylvania woman a $15,138 prize

Shawntee Dawson of Delta, Pa., has played Racetrax for as long as she can remember. While she wins “every few months on the horses,” the Maryland native had never claimed a prize as large as the $15,138 windfall that brought her to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

She grew up in Bel Air and favors Racetrax, although she plays scratch-offs and once won $5,000 on an instant ticket her son got her for Christmas. The loyal player said she just loves watching the Racetrax horses on the monitors. When it comes to selecting numbers, Shawntee picks from a variety of significant dates. She just toppled her last big win of $14,000 but betting a combination of birthday numbers!

Her windfall arrived on Aug. 31, when the 53-year-old bought the lucky ticket at Wawa #586 in Bel Air. The avid fan didn’t stay to watch the races that day and later checked her luck at home on her computer. Shawntee was so overwhelmed when she saw her prize topped the $2,000 mark that she let out an ecstatic screech, which brought her concerned daughter running to her side.

“My daughter asked how much I won and I was so excited that I couldn’t concentrate to figure it out,” Shawntee said. “I had to have her tell me. She looked online and told me $5,046 times 3 and that’s what I won.”

The winner had placed a Superfecta bet that horses 1, 11, 3 and 7 would finish in that exact order (a $5,046 prize) and added the Bonus multiplier feature to her ticket. The multiplier for her winning game was 3. She typically plays for 10 races but, on a whim, upped her drawings to 20. This random change paid off as she hit her numbers on the 12th race on the ticket.

“This is truly a big blessing,” she said.

Shawntee plans to use the prize to pay off her credit card bills, boost her savings account and help care for an autistic relative.

Joining her in this victory is Wawa #586 located at 601 Hoagie Road in Bel Air. Because the store sold a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, the Harford County retailer will earn a $151.38 bonus from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Racetrax Horses Speed to a Win for Retired State Trooper

Claims $12,183 prize on Superfecta bet

A retired Maryland State Police trooper received the perfect ticket this week — one with a $12,183 Racetrax prize attached! The Prince George’s County man saw his four horses gallop across the finish line in perfect order to deliver his big win.

The Racetrax regular found his Lottery luck when he stopped at Saraniya Fuel in Accokeek, a local gas station, on his way to the gym. He bought a ticket for 10 drawings and added the Bonus multiplier feature, betting that horses 4, 1, 6 and 9 would cross the finish line in that exact order. Our winner then went on with his morning routine, taking care of a few errands and stopping by a store he owns before heading back to the gas station to see if his Superfecta bet won a prize.

The lucky lawman plays other Lottery games, too, like Pick 3 and Pick 4. He plays Racetrax “pretty much every day” and often stops at this particular gas station because the owner is friendly. The Bonus multiplier for his winning game was 3 and his choice of winning numbers were inspired by a license plate he saw earlier that day. The winner said he always plays numbers that have a special meaning or connection to his life.

“I’m a very spiritual person, so any time I get a certain feeling from any set of numbers I come across, I try to play them,” he said. “Whenever I don’t, they always hit!”

While this is the biggest single Lottery prize the retiree has claimed, he is no stranger to winning. Just last month, the happy player landed four winning tickets with more than $10,000 in prizes. Being a bit of an entrepreneur, our mystery man plans to invest his Lottery windfall in his businesses.

The other winner in this story is Saraniya Fuel at 15797 Livingston Road in Accokeek. Because it sold a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, Saraniya Fuel will earn a $121.83 bonus from the Lottery. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Scratch-offs, Racetrax deliver lucky wins

Among the many lucky Maryland Lottery winners last week were three who claimed prizes in the $10,000 range at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

A 43-year-old player from Alexandria, Va. bought a $5 Deluxe Crossword scratch-off at New Carrollton Liquors located at 8433 Annapolis Road in Hyattsville. The game delivered a $10,000 payday. All nine $50,000 top prizes in this new game are unclaimed along with 19 more $10,000 prizes and thousands of others ranging from $5 to $1,000.

A 70-year-old East Baltimore player secured a $10,000 score on $1,000,000 Blowout, a $20 scratch-off game. The lucky instant ticket was discovered at Jolly’s Food & Convenience Mart at 1500 North Monroe Street in Baltimore. Six of seven $1 million prizes remain unclaimed in the game, along with 13 $50,000 prizes and 48 $10,000 prizes.

Also, a Lutherville resident hit for $9,909 on a Racetrax Exacta wager. Playing at the BP gas station at 2202 North Rolling Road in Woodlawn, the lucky 46-year-old found a win with horses 12 and 11. Adding the Bonus multiplier option tripled the prize.

Claims $14,210 prize, second big win this year

A Prince George’s County electrician made his second visit to Maryland Lottery headquarters in five months, thanks to his fondness for playing Racetrax and, in his opinion, his practice of giving back when good fortune comes his way. His $12,400 win, which follows a $224,000 win back in April, took place on Sept. 23 on his way to do a favor.

A series of unusual circumstances led to the Lanham man’s big win.

“It was Sunday and I don’t usually work on Sundays and it was raining and I don’t usually work in the rain,” said the father of three. “But the customer who called me was in a tight spot, so I headed over.”

On the way, the 56-year-old stopped at E&C Mid-Atlantic #718 in Glenn Dale to keep a tradition going. “I like to use my clients’ addresses for Racetrax numbers. It’s worked out often, especially for the big win in April.”

He placed a Superfecta wager that horses numbers 6, 8, 2 and 9 would finish one of five races in that exact order. The Lanham resident checked the Racetrax results for his races when he finished his project.

“I saw it right away, a Superfecta win on the very first race I played. A $14,200 win!” His first thoughts were gratitude to the Man upstairs. “Another blessing like this? I must have sent up a thousand thank you’s.”

The lucky dad plans to set aside some of his winnings for his kids’ future, as he did with his previous Racetrax win. He will share much of the rest with people he can think of right now and others he might meet who need help.

“I firmly believe that I have to give back when I’m blessed. Friends, family, strangers – lots of people around me need help.” The winner said he believes this practice is key to his continued good luck. “Help people when you can. Ever since April and now again with this win, I’ve been able to do some good.”

Also lucky is his Prince George’s County Lottery retailer. E&C Mid-Atlantic #718 located at 12300 Annapolis Road earns a $142 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Sisters Horse Around after $15,473 Racetrax Win

Baltimore sisters Barbara Demeritte, right, and Judy Bell danced around the Lottery Winner’s Circle after Barbara collected her $15,473 Racetrax prize.

Trifecta Box wager delivers big prize

After Barbara Demeritte collected her $15,473 Racetrax prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, she and her sister were ready to dance, and that’s just what they did. After gyrating for a few minutes and talking about her good luck, Barbara proclaimed, “I’m going to do the dance again tonight!”

The lucky Baltimore resident is a big Racetrax fan and plays regularly, shunning all other games.      “I love Racetrax,” Barbara said. “I like to see the horses when they’re moving!” The happy winner enjoys the animated animals’ noises and the sound of the announcer’s voice calling the race. And, it’s a safe bet that when the 56-year-old winner places a wager on Racetrax, she will not leave the Lottery retailer until after the race is run and she has had a chance to enjoy the spectacle.

Her sister Judy, meanwhile, preferred scratch-offs and the occasional casino excursion before Barbara’s big win. Judy is now a Racetrax convert.

As for plans for the proceeds of the payoff on the simulated ponies, Barbara has definite plans for her prize. “I’m going to enjoy every bit of it!” she said. More specifically, she is planning a crab cake dinner and particularly festive Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. “I can buy the wine and the turkey,” Barbara said.

The loyal Racetrax fan has won prizes before in amounts up to about $600. A $3 single Trifecta Box bet she placed Sept. 25 on the high-odds combination of 10, 11 and 12 paid off handsomely. Also securing a tidy sum is Edgewood Liquors at 3302 Edgewood Street in Baltimore. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, the store earns a 1 percent bonus from the Lottery. The $154.73 bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Bowie man’s horses storm across finish line to deliver $16,160 payoff

A familiar Racetrax player stopped by Maryland Lottery headquarters on Wednesday afternoon with a winner of a smile. Paul McDonald of Bowie sauntered into the Winner’s Circle after claiming a $16,160 prize on yet another winning Racetrax ticket.

The 48-year-old is no stranger to the applause that greeted him, as this marks his fifth time celebrating a big win with the Lottery staff!

When it comes to Lottery games, Paul only plays Racetrax. Last year, the lucky man won a $194,188 prize, which is the third largest in the state’s Racetrax history! “My friends all tell me that I need to teach a Racetrax class and show everyone how to play,” Paul said.

The fan of the horse racing game confesses that he has no special process for picking his pixelated ponies. He prefers to bet his money on the long-odds horses that have a higher payoff. Aside from this caveat, Paul just goes with the “special feeling” in his gut when placing bets. His routine is certainly working!

This time around, Paul placed a Superfecta Box bet with the Bonus multiplier option on the numbers of 1, 4, 7, and 11 to win the $16,160 prize.

Paul always plays Racetrax at his favorite hangout, the Corner Lounge at 105 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, the Lottery retailer will receive a bonus of $161.60! This is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Wins $22,517 prize at nearby grocery

A Baltimore resident happily wheeled to a $22,517 Racetrax win while passing the time during a repair of his car and tires.

The mechanic estimated the repair work would take at least two hours. Rather than sit in the waiting room, the Lottery fan went across the street to Bel-Garden Bi-Rite Supermarket. He sat on a bench outside the store and, after realizing his long stay had attracted store employees’ notice, the senior citizen went inside to try his Lottery luck.

The 73-year-old placed a Trifecta wager for five drawings, each with the same numbers of 9, 11 and 12. He added the Bonus multiplier feature, too. On a Trifecta bet, the horses must finish in first, second and third place in the exact order as the bet. The Racetrax fan has won with these numbers before and hoped for a repeat performance.

By this time, his two-hour wait was up. Rather than watch the races, the lucky man returned to the repair shop, picked up his car and went home. He scanned his ticket on his Maryland Lottery smartphone app to see if any of the games won and saw an unusual message. Off he went to the Lottery retailer to scan his ticket for a win. He quickly realized he had scored his highest prize of $22,517 on his favorite game!

When asked what he plans to do with the windfall, the winner said he will buy something nice for his wife and his son and save the rest for future endeavors. Joining in the celebration is the grocery store where our winner passed his time. Bel-Garden Bi-Rite Supermarket on 5950 Belair Road in Baltimore earns a $225.17 bonus for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize. Congrats to both winners!

Construction worker wins big with Racetrax

It happened in a flash, and, according to a mysterious Anne Arundel County man, his Lottery luck all came down to timing. The 36-year-old construction worker popped into the Pasadena Dash In for a few Racetrax wagers and came out a big winner.

On his final race, he won $14,581!

When the horses rounded the track on the last of five races, the tumblers of luck began to turn for the Pasadena resident. Moments later, each of the four horses crossed the finish line in order — 8, 10, 2 and 4 — to send him to the Lottery Winner’s Circle. The approximate odds of the win are just over one in 21,000.

As the results and the payouts flashed across the screen, the lucky handicapper said he couldn’t believe the payout. He described his reaction as being so stunned that his eyes began to flutter and twitch.

“The numbers I picked were just random. Timing is just the name of the game,” he said.

The anonymous winner calmed his nerves and confirmed his prize on a Lottery ticket scanner before stealthily exiting the store.

The lucky player, who doesn’t plan to share news of his good fortune, told Lottery officials that friends and family would find out around the holidays. For now, his winnings will go in the bank!

His Lottery retailer also shares in the fun. Dash In #1533 located at 103 Mountain Road in Pasadena earns a $145 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Racetrax regulars, mom Huong Mai (left) and winning daughter Diena Mai celebrate after Diena’s pick hit for $12,818.80 at Pimlico Check Cashing in Randallstown.

Windsor Mill pair plays together regularly, ‘just for fun,’ picks up $12,818

Huong Mai taught her daughter, Diena Mai, to play Racetrax, but on Oct. 16, Diena showed her mother how it’s done when she won $12,818.80 on a 10-cent bet.

The two women from Windsor Mill are Racetrax regulars, Huong said. “We play together every week.” It’s mainly a social thing, and they play at a variety of locations.

“It’s just for fun,” the mom said, adding, “I play the most.”

Having the most experience playing Racetrax isn’t what brought home the Superfecta Box prize.  Diena, 19, got the winning combination of horses to play from her mom, who, in turn, got the combination 6, 8, 9 and 12 from a friend.

“He hit before,” Huong said.

Diena played the lucky numbers as a Superfecta Box bet at Pimlico Check Cashing in Randallstown to score the win. While Huong has picked up Racetrax prizes ranging from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, she has never hit as big as her daughter did with her wager.

The windfall is not so much that the mother and daughter have any elaborate plans, they said. Mainly, they’ll pay bills with the prize and deal with household expenses. A celebration, however, is in order.

“We do have to celebrate this!” Diena said, adding that she anticipates buying a new bed, doing a little shopping and enjoying a celebratory seafood dinner.

The Mai household isn’t the only place with reason to celebrate. For selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more, Pimlico Check Cashing located at 3538 Brenbrook Drive earns a bonus of $128.18. The bonus is equal to 1 percent of the prize.

Lottery fan’s favorite game nets him a $31,454 win

A Baltimore County Racetrax player attributes his recent collision with Lottery luck to his wife. Returning home after dinner Saturday night, a quick stop at High’s in Perry Hall to play her favorite Pick 4 combination put him in the right place at the right time to win more than $31,000.

“I play pretty often, but I wouldn’t have bought that ticket if she hadn’t wanted to get her numbers,” said the retired federal government employee. “ ‘I might as play, too,’ I said to myself.” Although a fan of all of the Maryland Lottery’s games, his favorite is Racetrax and that’s the game he chose. “For some reason, it felt like a good time to pick the long shots, so I chose 12, 11, 10.”

The Perry Hall resident placed the Trifecta bet for 10 drawings and the couple returned home.

Later, as they prepared for bed, the 60-year-old checked the Racetrax results using his Maryland Lottery app. “You’re not going to believe this,” he said to his wife. When he told her of their good luck, she was sure he was kidding. “I was shocked. I even asked him to pinch me to make sure I wasn’t dreaming,” she told Lottery officials.

Too excited to turn in, the couple returned to the store where they’d found their big winner even though it was 1 a.m. “We had to know for sure!” Even with the Racetrax win confirmed, sleep was still elusive. “We just celebrated together until sunup and then thanked God for the win all through the day Sunday.”

The couple will share their winnings with their church and pay off bills. High’s #7 at 9414 Scott Moore Way, where their lucky story began, earns a $414.54 bonus from the Lottery for selling a winning Racetrax ticket of $10,000 or more.
