Arbutus chef wins big with Superfecta bet
Baltimore County Chef Atef Khalil works hard to make sure the crab cakes are fat and the seafood is fresh every day at Linthicum Heights hotspot G & M Restaurant & Lounge. When he takes a break, he likes to relax by checking the results for his Maryland Lottery Racetrax games.
Last week, when Atef checked his numbers, he experienced more excitement than relaxation. His horses matched the race results exactly, sending Atef to the winner’s circle with a $43,452 Superfecta prize.
Atef said he has cooked all of his life, spending 16 years of his career at the famous seafood spot. The 53-year-old purchased the lucky ticket on the way into work, stopping at the Nursery BP adjacent to the restaurant. He picked his horses’ numbers for 10 Racetrax races from portions of his birthdate and placed a Superfecta bet that the 3, 9, 12 and 6 horses would finish in that exact order. As usual, he didn’t check the race results until his break.
When Atef discovered that his numbers matched the results of a race, he sought help from the store clerk to look up the race’s payout.
“It was hard to believe the amount that I saw,” Atef said. “This is good news. You are so happy when you win!”
He excitedly shared his good news with his co-workers in the kitchen and restaurant. Fortunately for fans of his cooking, the Racetrax win won’t have Atef packing his chef togs just yet. He plans to use the windfall to by a nice car and add to his savings.
For selling a winning Racetrax ticket over $10,000, the Lottery retailer located at 816 West Nursery Road in Linthicum Heights will receive a bonus from the Lottery of $434.52 – 1 percent of the prize value.
